Space Base Nuclear Power Source Tested

3/2/2018

Not to be outdone by Euro space accomplishments, NASA has just successfully tested a nuclear power reactor the size of a roll of paper towels that may well be the key to powering bases on the moon and on Mars in the near future.

But it’s not just the small size of the nuclear power source that’s so path-breaking — it’s that it will allow astronauts to go virtually anywhere in the solar system. The first, several-months-long test in the beginning of November last year was successful, leading the way for a full power test later this month.

This kind of portable power has all kinds of uses, not just in space. It will likely, however, also lead to further militarization of space.
