Smart Fibers May Figure in Next-Gen Combat Threads

How would you like your clothes to get warmer as temperatures fall and cooler as they rise? Would camos that automatically blend in with current surroundings be an advantage? Well, clothes and military camo wear may soon have these abilities.


Smart fibers that use “microencapsulation” are already in thermo-chromic and photo-chromic fabrics, which change color with changes in temperature or light. For now, the fabrics’ microencapsulated colorings are limited to lingerie and swimwear, along with industrial clothing and protective garments.
