Not to be outdone by the Army in using drones, the U.S. Navy is preparing to deploy drones to clear underwater minefields. Prior to drones, humans were tasked with this very dangerous but necessary exercise.
Naval Sea Systems Command is leading the way in “taking the man out of the minefield” with sonar mine-hunting drones. All of this will be accomplished via a new unmanned surface vehicle, which will, in turn, be remotely controlled from a larger group of surface host ships.
The Navy is working with tech leaders such as Textron Systems to potentially leverage their Barracuda Mine Neutralization system to detect and destroy underwater mines. Learn more here.
