Most people are aware that the demand for lithium is growing rapidly as the electric car market expands and iPhones keep multiplying. This “rare” metal plays a central role for Teslas and other electric-vehicle battery providers. But demand for manganese is also growing rapidly. Lithium’s less popular cousin is key to the steel industry and a growing clean-energy market, including off-grid power systems, energy storage and, yes, electric vehicles.
And so far, Australia and South Africa are the only suppliers to the U.S.
The problem? They mined a lot less of it in 2016 than they did in 2015 — 8.6% less to be exact. That’s not good news for U.S. manufacturers or the military, which relies on manganese for off-grid power in forward and remote positions.
