The first is a hypersonic missile Dagger with a 2,000-kilometer range that can be launched from a MiG-31 at high altitude and accelerate to Mach 10 under controlled flight. Secondly, President Putin claimed they had begun production on Avantguard, a surface-launched maneuverable hypersonic missile that will “glide” on the upper atmosphere at Mach 20.
The U.S. has some of the most capable engineers in the world in Raytheon and Lockheed Martin to work on this but building defensive systems capable of tracking and intercepting hypersonic missiles is an order of magnitude higher challenge than intercepting Scud missiles.
