Cleaning up on cleaner oceans?

A new technology is emerging that works 24/7 to remove polluting debris from the ocean. “Seabins” float in the water and an electrical, submersible water pump moves an inner basket up above the water's surface and then down below it, which pulls in the water, capturing everything from cigarette butts and food wrappers to oil.

The idea is to have these ocean-borne suckers constantly removing the bad stuff that threatens sea life and, by extension, human beings. Further development of smaller filters for pathogens is underway. A potential defense application might just be removing natural or even man-made pathogens from both coastal waters and freshwater sources.
